Szolnok became the county seat of Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County in 1876, but even
in 1945, its urban infrastructure had not reached the level that its administrative
status would have required. The reconstruction following the devastation of World
War II did not change the structure of the city, although some parts were revitalized.
The early 1960s can be considered a turning point in the development of the city, as
the realisation of the socialist industrial city began. The demand for modernization
was also to be needed, and the first modifications appeared in the structure of the
city, such as the development of today’s Boldog Sándor István Street as a continuation of Szapáry Street, which meant the creation of a north-south transportation
corridor. A modern city needs a city centre, so the groundbreaking took place in
1969. The houses of residents were outdated so expropriation in several areas,
such as along the banks of the Zagyva begun, and ten-story panel blocks were built
signalling the new times.
