Abstract

The development of urban green spaces has become a key issue, even in one of
the greenest cities in Hungary, Szeged, due to the increasing negative impacts of
climate change, the higher visitation during the pandemic, and the adaptation of
European sustainable urban development policies. Urban green spaces are extremely diverse in terms of their condition, usage, and legal status, and they provide various ecosystem services, such as cultural and recreational benefits. Therefore, the success of development efforts requires an assessment, understanding,
systematization, and formulation of differentiated development plans related to
these spaces. This can ensure that all of them receive development that meets the
needs of those who use them and those who wish to use them. The main goal of
this research was to create development schemes for Szeged’s urban green spaces
that reflect both the actual and potential cultural ecosystem services they provide.
