HISTORICAL SETTLEMENT GEOGRAPHY OF THE DANUBE REGION UNTIL 1920
Abstract
The following paper is part of a larger work in progress, co-authored by several authors, on
the historical geography of the Carpathian Basin regions. By Transdanubia we mean the
large area between the Danube, the Drava and the western border of the country. The
settlement history of the Little Great Plain, which is separate from this, was therefore not
examined. The historical processes have been divided into sections according to the period
of historiography. This paper is a tribute to the work of our former head of department,
Professor K. K., who in his research on population and settlement geography always kept in
mind that the present-day life phenomena, society and morphology of settlements cannot
be understood with sufficient certainty without historical references. He himself therefore
studied the Hungarian settlement system in the light of time, natural conditions and social
phenomena.
