A tanulmány az izraeli Garizim-hegyen épült templom régészeti feltárásainak eredményeit ismerteti, melyek alapjaiban kérdőjelezik meg a korábbi történeti és teológiai konszenzusokat az ókori Izrael vallási topográfiájáról. A perzsa kori JHWH-templom létének igazolása nemcsak a szamaritánus kultusz intézményes kereteit tárja fel, hanem új megvilágításba helyezi a Pentateuchus keletkezéstörténetét, valamint a jeruzsálemi egytemplomúság eszméjének kialakulását is. A garizimi templom jelenléte a perzsa és hellenisztikus korban párhuzamos vallási központként értelmezendő, amely a judaizmus és a szamaritánus hagyomány szétválásának későbbi folyamatát is újraértelmezi. A felfedezések politikai és vallási implikációi a kortárs tudományosság számára is kihívást jelentenek.
