Approaches for assessing intimate partner violence (IPV) in Hungary are based on a unitary concept of intimate partner violence. This hinders the understanding of the phenomenon. The focus of this study is to provide an estimate for IPV in Hungary. The study introduces and applies a non-unitary approach of intimate partner violence. Such an estimate can be achieved by suggesting possible assessment criteria. There is a paucity of data on intimate partner violence in Hungary. The main data sources are social surveys and the criminal statistical system. Data is noisy and marred by inconsistency. Applying dimensions for injurious domestic violence yields estimates for the two main types of IPV. A more accurate estimate can be given for prevalence.
