Abstract

The aim of my study is to explore the social attitudes towards effective life imprisonment.  To this end, a representative public opinion poll based on a sample of 1,000 people was conducted in 2023, using the methodology I have published, but conducted by Medián, which sought answers to the following questions. How do people feel about the death penalty and life imprisonment? What socio-demographic differences are observed in the formation of different views? The results of the research show that there is a long-standing and steadily declining social support for the death penalty, while the acceptance of the alternative most severe punishment, the effective life imprionment, is increasing. The research fits in with similar research over the last 30 years, and the results of this research can be compared with those of other studies to identify trends, but it also raises questions that have not been answered before, and is therefore important and missing.
