This review presents the comparative law volume "Fair trial and judicial independence," edited by Attila Badó and published by Springer. The reviewer, Tamás Háger, highlights the significance of the work, which examines two fundamental pillars of modern justice: judicial independence and fair trial, from an international perspective. The volume contains ten studies, primarily by Hungarian authors, who analyze key institutions of the judiciary using the methods of comparative law. The review discusses each study individually. Zoltán Fleck analyzes the relationship between judicial organizations and fundamental rights, and the models of judicial administration. Attila Badó compares the systems of judicial selection (English, American, German, French), emphasizing the importance of merit-based selection. Attila Badó and Kata Szarvas examine the role of automated case allocation systems in ensuring judicial independence. Samantha Cheesman presents the application of the principles of a fair trial in common law and continental legal systems. Márton Sulyok reviews the future of the right to a fair trial in Russia, Africa, and China. János Bóka deals with the problem of the reasonable duration of proceedings. Mátyás Bencze analyzes the issues of evidence evaluation from the perspective of a fair trial. Szonja Navratil examines the different dimensions of the publicity of justice (trials, judgments, media). Péter Mezei presents the historical and current application of the ne bis in idem principle, while Tamás Sulyok analyzes the right to defense from a comparative constitutional law perspective. In conclusion, the reviewer states that the volume is an instructive and thought-provoking read that highlights the global importance of key guarantees for the rule of law: judicial independence and fair trial.
