In my work I examine the problem of chatter or idle talk, a well-known phenomenon that is rarely thematized in academic discourse. I seek to identify the social expectations that unnecessary or idle speech conflicts with, and I will try to explore the challenges posed by chattering. My interpretation explores the specific characteristics of idle talk: how it creates an emptiness in speech and how it creates the appearance of wholeness. The study also addresses instances in which the term “chatter” becomes a tool in discursive struggle.
