Abstract

The art pedagogical and therapeutic methods used by Friedl Dicker-Brandeis, which are well-suited for use in art therapy and therapy, and which were based on her previous alternative pedagogical and Bauhaus experiences, are well in line with the models used in today’s trauma processing.
Background and Aims: My study examines the connection between the visual modality of art therapy and art pedagogy in liminal situations. To this end, I examine the art pedagogical and art therapeutic work of artist-teacher Friedl Dicker-Brandeis with children in the Terezín concentration camp along methodological models, filling a gap in the Hungarian literature. For my investigation, I call upon the model of the expressive therapies continuum (ETC) (Kagin & Lusebrink, 1978; Hinz, 2020; Malchiodi, 2018), which also does not yet have a Hungarian-language introduction, and the characteristics of visual art therapy during trauma processing, which were summarised by a group of art therapists (Kiss et al. 2023).
Methods: My study is problem-based; I do not write to be complete or from a historical perspective, but with the help of source analysis, I am looking for the methodological characteristics that could be used for later art therapy, while she herself was part of it.
Results: The art pedagogical but also therapeutically applicable methods used by Friedl, which were based on her previous alternative pedagogical and Bauhaus experiences, are well in line with the models used in today’s trauma processing. Through all this, she also became the person we can now look back on as a personal example, from whom this liminal situation itself brought about the development of personal existence and autonomy, paradoxically becoming self-actualizing through it.
