Abstract

Background and Aims: According to Jaspers (2008), we all inevitably encounter what he calls “Grenzsituationen” (borderline situations) in the course of our lives; due to their inevitability, these situations involve experiences that profoundly shake our sense of security. Such life situations include illness, suffering, death, and vulnerability, which involuntarily prompt self-reflection and draw attention to our limitations and finitude, thereby forcing us to face ourselves authentically. According to Jaspers, these difficult life situations can also have a positive outcome, because they create the possibility of encountering our “true selves,” break us out of the routine of everyday life, and can open the way to authentic existence, to a transcendent way of thinking and living.
