Abstract

The bicentenary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and its Library provides an opportunity for scientific disciplines not only to reflect on their own historical trajectories but also to consider their contemporary roles and future directions. Over the past century, psychology has developed into a highly diverse discipline that, alongside its contributions to basic science, plays an increasingly important role in applied settings. This development has been strongly supported by the discipline’s integration into the academic community, which has fostered continuous dialogue with related fields and enabled the growth of interdisciplinary collaborations.
In this context, the present issue features a contribution by András N. Zsidó, an expanded and revised version of his lecture delivered at the conference 100 Years of Psychology – Nodes, Boundaries, and Opportunities of an Interdisciplinary Network, organized as part of the MTA200 commemorative program. The paper reviews the temporal dynamics and attentional mechanisms involved in the processing of visual threat stimuli and demonstrates how findings from cognitive neuroscience refine our understanding of the early stages of fear responses.
We hope that this article contributes to our journal’s ongoing mission of making current developments in psychological research accessible and relevant not only to researchers but also to professionals working in applied settings.
