Abstract

Background and Aims: The birth of a child is a normative crisis, both for the parents and the family as a whole. A growing number of phenomenological/psychological qualitative studies have examined the effects of this event in experience, including effects on identity. Furthermore, in recent decades the issue has typically arisen in feminist discourse and the ethics of parental care. By contrast, there are few classical or contemporary phenomenological texts have provided a phenomenological description of the contemporary parenting experience. This study seeks to fill this gap using the work of Husserl and Lévinas, with the goal of delineating the constituent elements of parenting from a first-person perspective: how responsibilities and sacrifices affect the parental consciousness, and how the experience and meaning of freedom change for the parent. We seek answers to questions such as the relationship between trauma and responsibility, nostalgia and freedom, as well as the evolution of a collaborative relationship between us and our children. The study will inevitably lead to a critical examination of Lévinas’ concepts of The Other and The Third Person from a phenomenological perspective.
