Abstract

Background and aims: The aim of our study was to explore the psychometric traits of the Hungarian version of the Dog-Directed Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (DD-PSDQ) and to examine it’s reliability and validity on the sample of dog owners.
Method: The questionnaire’s reliability and validity was checked on a convenient sampling consisting of 715 participants (67 men and 648 women; Mage = 37,47, SD = 11,78), inclusion criteria was to own at least one dog. Besides the 20-item DD-PSDQ, the 32-item Dog-Owner Relationship Scale (DORS) was also used. To examine the questionnaire’s validity we applied exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and checked the internal consistency of each scale. Convergent validity was studied by applying correlation to the scales of the two questionnaires.
Results: During the exploratory factor analysis we had to exclude 9 problematic items out of the 20. The remaining 11 items formed a three-factor structure, just like the original questionnaire, the three-factor structure proved to be stable. The internal consistency of the scales was acceptable, thus the statistical analyses confirm the reliability of the 11-item Hungarian version.
Discussion: The validity and reliability of the 11-item Hungarian Dog-Directed Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire were confirmed, the scale is fit to be used for further scientific research and in applied psychology.
