Abstract

Background and aims: Being absorbed in the story is one of the main motivation of watching movies, as well as the source of experienced joy. In the light of the increasing consumption of movies, we find it important to validate the internationally acknowledged Narrative Engagement Scale, which has lots of psychological associations.
Methods: In our cross-sectional research – based on convenience sampling – we analysed data of 406 participants (234 female; mean age: 30.8 years, SD = 10.9) who watched the short films of Father and dauther and/or Something blue.
Measurements: Narrative Engagement Scale (NES), Tellegen Absorption Scale (TAS), Interpersonal Reactivity Inventory (IRI), Enjoyment Scale, Liking index, and questions regarding demographic and film-consumption characteristics.
Results: According to the confirmatory factor analysis the goodness of fit indexes of the 4-factor model are excellent in case of Something blue or acceptable in case of Father and daughter. The full scale and each subscale possesses values between acceptable and excellent level of reliability, its Cronbach-α between .72 and .93. According to the results of the concurrent validity examination there are levels of moderate and strong correlations between the full scale and the subscales of the Hungarian NES (r = .55–.76). Examining convergent validity, Hungarian NES showed a significant, weak, positive correlation with both trait absorption and trait empathy. According to predictive validity examination the total score of Hungarian NES and its certain subscales significantly predicted the variability of Liking and Enjoyment. Furthermore, the subscales Attentional focus and Emotional engagement predicted the variability of change of three attitudinal items related to rape in case of Something blue – in a negligible extent. Females, older and more educated participants engaged in the narratives of both movies significantly more intensively.
Conclusion: The Hungarian version of NES is a valid and reliable measurement tool – even in the case of different film genres.
