In this perspective, my contribution focuses on female associations of an occult and esoteric nature which flourished in the wake of those heterodox spiritualistic doctrines which had so much diffusion and success between the mid-nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. In the first part, I focus on the impulse and suggestions that these doctrines, grafted onto the Mazzinian legacy, transmitted to Italian proto-feminism. The performance serves as the final act of a trilogy dedicated to major figures of twentieth-century literature from Trieste, written and performed by Mauro Covacich. Covacich’s choice of performative medium aims to break <br>down barriers and engage in a more direct, authentic, almost physical communication with his third numen, following Svevo and Joyce. In a vivid portrayal, Covacich emphasizes not only the power of Saba’s poetic language but also his human dimension. The backdrop is Trieste itself, a city intrinsically linked to both Covacich and Saba by an intense yet controversial relationship, though <br>each in a different way. Covacich captures this emotional duality by referencing Saba’s most renowned works, as well as private letters and biographical anecdotes, and intertwining the poet’s personal experience with his own, thus turning the entire monologue into a shared journey.</p> Caterina Di Bella Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2024-09-09 2024-09-09 22 10.58849/italog.2024.DIB Dialoghi e scontri fra due mediatori culturali https://ojs.elte.hu/italogramma/article/view/8802 <p>This essay will deal with the cultural transmission between Hungary and Italy towards the end of the 1920s, focusing on two protagonists who were prominent cultural intermediaries: Antonio Widmar from Fiume, who lived in Hungary at that time, and the Hungarian Ignác Balla, who by contrast lived in Italy. Included in this essay is Widmar's letter addressed to Stefano Pirandello in the autumn of 1926, as Pirandello's representative for Hungary with the proposal that the author's company, on tour in Fiume, continue their journey to Budapest. Widmar's other letters were written to Balla and discuss the publication of an important novel <br>by the well-known author Dezső Kosztolányi, "The Bloody Poet", later republished as "Nero, The Bloodthirsty Poet" (Néro, a véres költő) both translated by Antonio Widmar. The story began in 1928, when Kosztolányi turned to Ignác Balla first personally, then in a letter, asking him for help with a possible Italian edition of his novel in Widmar's translation, describing him as a "dear friend". Balla did everything he could to satisfy Kosztolányi's wish and eventually managed to find a willing publisher. However, Widmar kept putting off revising his translation until the contract expired. The novel was released only 4 years later in 1933 at another publishing house (Genio) with the support of Widmar, without the collaboration of Balla.</p> Ilona Fried Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0 2024-09-09 2024-09-09 22 10.58849/italog.2024.FRI Il romanziere, il poeta e il monumento https://ojs.elte.hu/italogramma/article/view/8803 <p>In this brief essay I will attempt to intertweave the lives of Dino Campana, a poet, Sebastiano Vassalli, a novelist and a historic building entitled 'Casa Bossi', designed by the renowned architect Alessandro Antonelli and completed in 1661, in Novara. Vassalli lived in this dwelling for an extended period from 1968 to 1982 and furthermore made this very construction protagonist of his novel 'Cuore di Pietra' (A Heart of Stone) in the 1990s. Dino Campana wrote, what was probably his very last poem, 'La Dolce Lombardia coi suoi Giardini' (Sweet Lombardy and its Gardens) in front of 'Casa Bossi' (for further analysis, assistance can be found at the Consolini Study Centre 'Campaniani Enrico' presided over by Mirna Gentilini). Defined by Vassalli as 'my mad father', Campana served as genuine inspiration throughout Versalli's career. One of them is based on a sermon by Roberto Caracciolo and can be read in the so-called Codex Érdy, the other is translated from the legend written in Antonino Pierozzi’s Chronicon, and can be found in the so-called Codex of Érsekújvár. In addition to these legends, there is another type of Catherinian text in Hungarian which was more or less hidden from the eyes of Hungarian scholars. This text is an excerpt from the Dialogo della divina provvidenza, the mystical dialogue of Catherine. The essay denies the legitimacy of the theory that presented the Chronicon’s translation as re-edited legend that contains the excerpt of the Dialogo. Data were collected by means of a grammaticality judgement test and a binary choice sentence completion test. The participants were L1 English and Hungarian university students of various levels of proficiency (A2, B1, B2 and C1). The results were interpreted both in correlation with certain learning variables such as L1, proficiency level, and the category the main verbs belong to according to Sorace’s Auxiliary Selection Hierarchy.
