Abstract

This study analyses the use of Dutch pragmatic markers (PMs), hoor, kijk, luister, weet je and zeg, in the broadcast corpus of Corpus Gesproken Nederlands and newly compiled podcast corpus, comparing Northern and Southern Dutch. The results highlight notable differences and shifts over two decades. Weet je is significantly more frequent in Northern Dutch podcasts (185.03 per 100,000 words) than in Southern Dutch (10.67). In Southern Dutch, weet je shows increased grammaticalization, often appearing with particles like wel. Kijk remains stable in Southern Dutch but has slightly increased in Northern Dutch. Its use as a quotative marker has declined in both varieties. Hoor is stable in Northern Dutch but has halved in Southern Dutch podcasts. Luister has increased in Northern Dutch but further declined in Southern Dutch. Zeg shows stable frequency across varieties but is less often used as an attention marker than two decades ago. These findings demonstrate evolving PM use shaped by sociolinguistic and media factors, reflecting the distinct dynamics of the two varieties of Standard Dutch.
