Background and Aims: The aim of this study is to investigate the psychometric properties of the Hungarian version of the Gender Essentialism Scale (GES) developed by Skewes, Fine and Haslam (2018).
Method: The GES was included in a questionnaire package as part of a research project examining the functioning of romantic relationships. A total of 421 people participated in the study. The validity of the scale was assessed by comparing it with the Sex-Role Egalitarianism Scale (Beere et al., 1984).
Results: Based on the empirical results, the Hungarian version of the GES is a reliable (α = 0.887) and valid unidimensional measurement instrument. According to the fit indices, the original unidimensional factor structure is adequate (χ2(265) = 648.812; p < 0.001; RMSEA = 0.057; CFI = 0.953; TLI = 0.949). Gender essentialism shows good convergent validity, medium correlation with gender egalitarianism, and also has independent positive explanatory power in relation to relationship satisfaction compared to gender egalitarianism.
Discussion: The Hungarian version of the GES is a reliable and valid measurement tool suitable for examining the psychological phenomenon of gender essentialism.
