Abstract

The history of the attributive construction “Hungarian Globe” is in the conceptual history a special example for the collision of semantic ambitions and traditional pragmatics. As a topos it condenses cartographic and imperial imaginations and is contextualized again and again as modern anachronism. This raises the question of the extent to which this topos makes it possible to refocus or at least expand the usual binary classification logic in the descriptions of the balance of power in the Habsburg Monarchy.
